Trams updates: bins; construction-work ceasing soon

Bins

Just a quick update to let you know that the bin relocations necessary during the upcoming roadworks (and along the detour route) are going to schedule; we’ve already positioned the new, wheeled bins and will be removing the large, side-loading bins next week.  Most of the new bins are next to the existing bins to make life easier for residents, as the old bins are removed we will reposition the new ones slightly to minimise obstruction wherever possible.

We’ve already started running the night shift route to get the crews used to the new route.  If they identify any potential over/under-provision due to the increased collection frequency, we will adjust where necessary.  A couple of the existing paper bins (blue lids) will be replaced with packaging bins (green lids) to improve recycling opportunities for residents.

We will continue to monitor the locations to see if any need to be adjusted.

Construction work ceasing soon (temporarily)

Formal instruction has been issued to Sacyr, Farrans Neopul (SFN) and Morrison Utility Services (MUS) to shut down the Trams to Newhaven construction site. This is in accordance with advice given by the Scottish Government over the last 48 hours.

The complexity of this project means that it will take a few days to action and there may be works that need to be completed in order to make the site safe and secure. Any further work that is undertaken will be done in accordance with Scottish Government guidelines around proximity working. Current traffic management arrangements will remain in place.

Work will continue off-site, again operating to strict social distancing guidelines, including design, planning and scheduling, as well as drawing up a remobilisation strategy for returning to the site once restrictions are lifted. We will also be closely liaising with MUS and SFN to look at ways of mitigating the impact of work stopping on the wider project.

The project contact centre will continue to be operational for any queries.

Changes to bin collection days

In late September Edinburgh Council wrote to all residents who use its kerbside bin service to update them on changes to their bin collection days and garden waste collections. In the letters, Edinburgh Council also included new bin collection calendars and, for residents who had signed up to Edinburgh Council’s new garden waste service, new garden waste bin permits were included.

The new collection dates and garden waste service started this week, so Edinburgh Council would be grateful if you can check your new bin calendars to ensure you are putting your bins out on the correct day. Garden waste bins may also be collected on a different day of the week to other bins. Residents can check their new bin calendars on Edinburgh Council’s website.

The changes to bin collection days is part of this year’s budget savings and will help the Council to save £500,000.

Free Collection by Edinburgh Council of garden waste to end in October 2018

Edinburgh Council is introducing an annual £25 fee (per bin) to collect brown garden waste bins. Coincident with this – the new service will be fortnightly throughout the year, instead of once every three weeks.

The current free garden waste service will continue until 5 October 2018 BUT if you want to continue receiving garden waste collections after that date, action is required before 22 July to register and pay to receive this service after October 2018.

The council states that its reasons for introducing a charge for garden waste collections are :

  • Garden waste collection is not a statutory service, and with reducing budgets and increasing costs, the council can no longer afford to provide the service for free.
  • Over 40% of councils in the UK charge for a garden waste collection and some have stopped the service altogether.
  • The £25 per year charge was agreed by the council at a meeting in February and it is estimated it will save £1.3 million each year and allow provision of a more frequent service.

You do not need to sign up for this service, but if you choose not to sign up you will stop receiving garden waste collections when the free service stops. Further communication from the council is planned later in the summer.
