Newhaven Tram project update
(adapted form an email from ‘Trams to Newhaven’)
Leith Walk Planters
In order to facilitate construction of Trams to Newhaven project, the 14 planters that are currently situated on Leith Walk will be moved to the Leith Links / Duke Street / Lochend Road / Easter Road junction. This will be a permanent move in order to accommodate dedicated cycling lanes post construction. The planters will be moved as part of the enabling works commencing on Monday 18 November 2019.
We are aware that some businesses / residents have been looking after the planters and where this is known we have made contact to explain. An example of this is the Kadampa Meditation Centre who we visited to explain what is happening and to thank them for the work they have done. We will be attaching posters to the planters this week to highlight the planters being moved.
Trimming of trees at South Leith Parish Church Wall
In order to begin works on the South Leith Parish Church wall later in December 2019, TD Tree and Land Services Limited, a specialist in tree maintenance, will trim back overhanging branches in order to gain access to the wall. The works will take place over two days (Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 November) and will not damage the trees in any way.
Wherever possible all work will be carried out from the ground. If required, trees will be climbed by trained personnel and will only take place once an assessment has been made that is safe to do so.
An eco-check for bats and nesting birds was undertaken recently which identified the trees had not been used by either species.
We will be highlighting both of above on the project website and in the electronic newsletter this week.
Tram Diversion Route Resurfacing Work – Revised Programme
(from an email from Edinburgh Council, time-stamped Wed, 3 Jul 2019 at 15:51)
I write to provide an update to my ongoing carriageway resurfacing programme in and around Leith prior to the commencement of the work to extend the tram to Newhaven.
Works on site at Pilrig Street junction, Dalmeny Street and East London Street are due to complete at the end of next week (Friday 12 July) after which time the main contractor has a company recess for 2 weeks.
On returning to site on the 29 July, the work to redesign the junction at Duke Street and Easter Road will fully commence (some preparatory work will take place next week) while the majority of work ongoing elsewhere will be predominantly carriageway resurfacing work.
To this effect, please find below a basic table detailing the proposed locations, dates and traffic management for the resurfacing work and I have also attached the full programme in the form of a Gantt chart. I will caveat this and remind everyone that dates are approximate as any delays can have a knock on effect, however the order of work should remain the same and I will update EdinTravel as works progress.
I will also explain that the programme has extended due to additional work being requested and some issues on site with traffic signal installations however the main resurfacing work should throw up little in the way of unforeseen delays and there will be no further additional work included in the programme unless it is deemed important and we create space in the existing programme. We also remain in full contact with the team leading the Tram extension with regards their preparatory work and start date.
As before, residents and traders will receive notices prior to the start of work in their area with more specific details, and I will forward a copy of these notices on as appropriate. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Proposed Carriageway Resurfacing Works – Summer 2019/20
(adapted from an email from Edinburgh Council)
The carriageway on a number of streets in your Ward are due to be resurfaced during the Summer of 2019. The roads affected have been prioritised because of their current condition and because the upcoming tram works will prevent any planned resurfacing work from taking place in and around the proposed tram line during the construction period.
The resurfacing works are planned to start on 27 May and will be carried out during weekdays in separate phases in order to minimise disruption to the public. On some traffic sensitive routes, work may be carried out under nightshift to minimise the impact on traffic. Most roads affected will be fully or significantly resurfaced with a select few being only partially resurfaced or patched as required. There will also be some improvements to pedestrian facilities, traffic signal upgrades and renewal of some street furniture.
