Bus Lane Operational Hours – Stakeholder Workshop Invitation

(adapted form an email from Edinburgh Council)

You may have heard of the City of Edinburgh Council’s public consultation on amending bus lane operational hours. Most bus lanes are currently closed to general traffic from Monday to Friday peak hours only (7.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm). To speed up bus journeys, we are considering changing the times they are closed to general traffic to 7am till 7pm seven days a week.

The consultation provides an opportunity for us to hear from and discuss the proposals with people and organisations potentially affected. Feedback from the consultation process will help to inform our decision.

In addition to an online consultation survey which will go live on the 31st October, we are inviting stakeholders to attend a workshop to hear about the proposals in further detail and to enable stakeholders to provide specific input on the proposals.

Please RSVP by emailing BusLane.HoursConsultation@edinburgh.gov.uk letting us know if you are able to attend by 18th November 2019. We ask that only up to two people from a single organisation attend and that you advise who you are representing when you RSVP.

If you are a representative organisation with members, we would be grateful if you could circulate this email to your members or colleagues that may be impacted by the proposals.

Controlled parking zones consultation

This consultation closes on 10 November 2019.

Here’s a map of some of the proposals:

Cameron Toll to BioQuarter – Active Travel Route Consultation

for information of all bus-users in Edinburgh

LHNCC’s secretary attending this meeting, so presumably will report on it at the next LHNCC meeting (7pm, Tuesday 22 October, Leith Community Education Centre).

She emails

Very interesting with identified issues relating to buses, e.g. removal of bus stops/loss of services; two-way cycle paths on one side of carriageway only; little reference to needs/problems for pedestrians – mobility scooters/physical disabilities/crossing cycle path when alighting from buses. All very similar to issues that arose with Trams to Newhaven, particularly relating to drawings that do not identify all street names or current/proposed bus stops.

The route does look interesting though.

Sir Geoff Palmer; Scotland and its links with the slavery trade

(adapted from an email from Edinburgh Napier University – LHNCC’s webmaster’s main employer)

When: Monday, 11 November 2019 from 18:30 to 21:00 (GMT)

Where: Edinburgh Napier University, Craiglockhart Campus, 219 Colinton Road, Edinburgh EH14 1DJ, United Kingdom. View Map

Professor Palmer will explore the subject of Scotland’s links with slavery and the slave trade. His lecture will be illustrated showing new information linked to this slavery. It will also describe how the Act of the Union of 1707 gave Scots the incentive to use this slavery, in Caribbean Islands such as Jamaica, to make Scotland and themselves rich. Scots became slave masters, slave owners and governors. In addition, Scottish doctors, surveyors, lawyers, joiners and many in the military made fortunes maintaining this slavery until it was abolished in 1838. Products from this slavery such as tobacco, coffee, sugar and cotton built the Scottish economy. Coarse linen, made in Scotland, made clothes for slaves. Professor Palmer will relate this history, which is now receiving great attention, in his own style of interlinking different areas of this important history.

He will link this history from Scottish surnames in Caribbean telephone books to the names of well-known Scots such as Henry Dundas, William Gladstone’s father, Sir John Gladstone, Robert Cunninghame Graham, Robert Bogle, Evan Baillie, Richard Oswald, James Buchanan, Earl Balcarres, Sir Archibald Grant, James Ewing, the Stirlings of Keir, the Wedderburns and Lord Henry Brougham. Finally, Professor Palmer will show that although this historical link between Scotland and Slavery cannot be changed, Glasgow University’s recent statement that it will use reparative justice to mitigate the consequences of a slavery from which it benefited financially is an act of goodness which others should follow.

Sir Geoff’s talk will be followed by a question and answer session as well as a wine reception.

Notification of major gas replacement works: Raeburn Place area, Edinburgh 6 January 2020

(adapted from an email from SGN, and posted here in case this affects LHNCC residents, businesses and visitors)

SGN manages the network that distributes natural and green gas to 5.9 million homes and businesses across Scotland and the south of England. We also provide the gas emergency service in these areas.

We’re investing £2.2 million to upgrade our gas network in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh and we’ll shortly begin the first section of our project.

This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply.

In agreement with the City of Edinburgh Council and local authorities, our work in the Raeburn Place are of Edinburgh will begin on Monday 6 January 2020 and last approximately 30 weeks. Some road closures will be in place, but we’ve split the work into two phases to minimise disruption. Continue reading
