Leith Walk/Halmyre Street Place Brief is now online

Here are the key points of CEC Planning’s blog. The full blog (with photos) is at https://planningedinburgh.com/2020/10/14/leith-walk-halmyre-street-place-brief-2/

The Leith Walk/Halmyre Street Place Brief is now online. The approved place brief provides guidance for a co-ordinated approach to a housing-led, mixed use development on a site east of Leith Walk and west of Halmyre Street.

The place brief has been prepared by the Council’s planning service in collaboration with other Council services. It has involved extensive engagement with the local community and other stakeholders through a series of community engagement events held in January this year, covered in this blog back in May.

Future planning applications for any part of the site will be required to address the principles within the place brief to ensure that development helps to create a good place.

The place brief has the status of non-statutory planning guidance and will be a material consideration in the determination of relevant planning applications.

You can download the full place brief here.

Piling on Salamander Street (adjacent to Bath Road) Monday 19th October

Barratt East Scotland will commence piling on Salamander Street adjacent to Bath Road on Monday 19th October.

The piling will take approximately one month on this first visit, but could finish up to a couple of weeks over depending on ground conditions. BES will have vibration monitors along the perimeter of the development during these works to protect local home owners, and ourselves.

If there are any questions pertaining to this please let me know.

Thanks

Regards

Heart of Newhaven – latest update

Where have the past two years gone?  On 4th October 2018 in Victory Primary School there were lots of ideas on what the community could do here once the children moved to their new school, then still in the planning stages.

We were warned that our dreams would take time and effort and there were delays. The new school building, first scheduled to be opened last August, will be completed one day despite, like so much else, being affected by Covid 19. We are working steadily on ways to promote a better normal as soon as we can. More on that next time.

Meanwhile the Heart of Newhaven Community with our iconic logo is steadily growing with people like you keen to support our programme of ideas.

This update comes hard on the heels of one you may have just received about Membership of our SCIO – Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation.   It’s a bit technical, so I’ll try to explain.

We registered the Heart of Newhaven Community SCIO SC049919, as the first step to qualify for the Community Asset Transfer of Victoria Primary School. Our SCIO constitution allows different categories of membership and the letter sent recently showed which one we think fits you as you register, as I hope you will.

Depending on which category you fall into, membership will give you a vote at meetings and so enable you to have your say in deciding what happens.

The ‘Asset’ (the whole of the current school site) to be ‘tansferred’ will belong to the Charity on behalf of the whole community: so the name Heart of Newhaven Community is apt.
But it’s not just a place. The beating pulse of the whole community already exists in people – YOU! –  living human beings. A really good way to help create what the name shows is to register on the form you’ve hopefully been sent.

If you have any questions about membership, haven’t had a letter, or think you received the wrong one, then you can find out more HERE on the website. If you’re still in doubt, please feel free to contact me directly at chair@heartofnewhaven.co.uk and I’ll try to help.

I hope the next one will be more exciting but we are definitely not just dreaming the time away and the next two years should be very impressive.

Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme

Free bike repairs worth up to £50 for those who need it most right now

https://www.cyclinguk.org/ScotCycleRepair

#ScotlandCycleRepair

Through the Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme, bike shops across Scotland are providing up to £50 worth of free bike repairs to those who need it most – whether it’s for an old bike that needs some work to make it roadworthy, or one that’s well used but requires some care.

Who can get their bike fixed?

People who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford these repairs. The COVID-19 crisis has hit many people hard, so we know it can be difficult to pay for essential bike repairs right now.

What repairs are covered?

  • Punctures or old tires
  • Problems with brakes
  • Gears that don’t work properly
  • Other issues that stop you using the bike

All cycles are welcome in the scheme including adults’ and children’s bikes, e-bikes and non-standard cycles e.g. tandems, tricycles, hand cycles and side-by-side cycles.

How do I use the scheme to get my bike fixed?

Search for your nearest participating bike shop either online via the Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme map www.cyclinguk.org/ScotCycleRepair or look out for a bike shop displaying our poster or window sticker.

You simply contact the bike shop to book your bike in for repairs. They will look at the bike and let you know what work needs doing, before going ahead with any repairs.

Police report: LHNCC area, September

Coronavirus pandemic

The Police response under Operation Talla has continued in line with the updated Government guidelines from 14th September 2020. During the first weekend thereafter, Police officers attended 405 house parties across Scotland (compared with 392 from the previous weekend) and further enforcement powers have now been granted to Police under Regulations 8 to 11, namely:

  • limiting public gatherings to a maximum of six people from two households
  • limiting indoor gatherings in private dwellings to a maximum of six people from two households
  • a person must not attend a party or social gathering in a private dwelling involving 16 or more people, who are members of more than one household
  • power of entry, including the use of reasonable force, in specific circumstances without the need for consent or a warrant

Breakdown of calls in north Leith/Newhaven area (approx 266 in total)*

  • 21 calls relating to public nuisance
  • 17 calls of theft
  • 13 domestic-related calls
  • 5 calls of other violence
  • 17 loud noise/music-related calls
  • 28 concern-for/missing person calls
  • 5 drug-related calls

*stats included until 21/09

Plain-clothes patrols across Leith

Over the weekend of 11-13th September, Police officers from response and community teams conducted plain-clothes patrols across the Leith area focussing on antisocial behaviour and drugs hotspots, including Leith Walk, Buchanan Street, Easter Road, Ferry Road, London Road, Portland Street, Ocean Terminal, public parks and walkways. These patrols resulted in licensed premises checks, numerous vehicles and persons stopped/searched and 3 people charged with drugs possessions.

Some of the local issues we have been looking to tackle include

  • drug misuse in areas of North Fort Street, Madeira Street and Industry Lane, resulting in increased high-visibility foot & mobile patrols
  • post-lockdown opening of David Lloyd gym, Newhaven Place and recent trend of unreported thefts from lockers – there have been no issues regarding the covid-related health guidelines; however, discussions with management have been held over increased security and potential suspects for the thefts
  • dog-walkers & fishermen within ‘restricted’ Forth Ports land at Western Harbour – liaising with Forth Ports regarding vandalisms to fences and locks, uniformed and plain-clothes patrols to highlight dangers of the area to members of public

Filming within Leith Police station

On 7th and 9th September, we were visited at Leith Police station by a film crew from Channel 4’s upcoming third series of Britain’s Most Historic Towns presented by Professor Alice Roberts. The Edinburgh episode will focus on Georgian Edinburgh, looking at how the city was physically and intellectually transformed during the first Industrial Revolution, and how the experiences of people living in the Old and New Town radically diverged during the period. The episode, which will include analysis of Alexander Carse’s painting, THE LANDING OF HIS MAJESTY GEORGE IVTH AT LEITH, 15TH AUG 1822 hung within the Council Chamber at Leith Police station, will air in 2021.

Fireworks Night

I have had a meeting with Asda Sandpiper’s designated Community Champion to discuss their safeguarding plans around the sale of fireworks, which will include double age-checks, increased security presence and CCTV monitoring.

Ocean Terminal shopping centre

PC Margo Darling has been appointed as Ocean Terminal liaison officer to replace PC Smith. There will be no monthly beat surgery at Ocean Terminal until further notice.
