£100,000 Litter & Flytipping Community Action Fund – applications invited

(adapted from an email from Zero Waste Scotland)

Zero Waste Scotland has launched a new £100,000 fund, which Keep Scotland Beautiful is administering, to enable community groups to apply for funding to help them tackle the litter and flytipping in their own neighbourhoods.

The proposed objectives of the Fund are to:

  • support community-led activity to tackle litter and flytipping and increase recycling on the go in Scotland;
  • promote and encourage increased community ownership of local environmental quality issues;
  • impact on current litter and flytipping levels within communities,  raise awareness and stimulate public behavioural change; and
  • promote partnership working between local communities, local authorities and other agencies.

Examples of the types of projects that will be considered are:

  • community clean-ups and prevention initiatives;
  • localised awareness raising and behaviour change campaigns to reduce some of Scotland’s most commonly littered and flytipped items;
  • adopt-a-street projects;
  • creating deterrents to litter and flytipping;
  • raising awareness of penalties.

You can view more about the Fund and how to apply online here

The closing date for applications is 19 September 2014.

Visit Scotland’s biggest Volunteer Recruitment Fair!

(Adapted from an email from Edinburgh Council. See also this post.)

Recruitment Fair Poster 2014

Charities, voluntary organisations and community groups are searching for volunteers, people like you! After more than a decade, the Annual Volunteer Recruitment Fair is firmly positioned as the capital city’s volunteering event of the year. It will showcase volunteering opportunities from across the city, putting potential volunteers in touch with hundreds of organisations.

If you’re considering volunteering, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet face to face with around fifty organisations currently looking for volunteers plus access hundreds of other volunteering opportunities, all under one roof.

Last year our volunteer recruitment fair helped around 1,000 people in their search for volunteering opportunities to make connections with the organisations that needed them. Make sure you’re one of them this year.

There are many benefits to volunteering, it’s a great way to use and develop your skills, try something new, make new friends and contacts, boost your confidence and general wellbeing, gain valuable experience, and of course, make a real difference!

For more information visit www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk or call Lara Celini on 0131 225 0630

The Fair will also feature:

  • over 50 organisations looking for volunteers that you can speak to directly
  • volunteering and employment specialists
  • a friendly café to relax and refresh in
  • access to hundreds of volunteering opportunities across the city
  • free employability workshops

Edinburgh Planning Concordat Engagement Fund – very small uptake

Edinburgh Council’s Planning Committee agreed in August 2013 to provide small grants (around £300) to assist community councils in carrying out engagement on major applications*. Recently, the Planning Committee stated that it’s received only 2 applications for such grants. It has asked CCs:

  1. Is there a particular reason why you have not applied for grant assistance to engage with the wider community?
  2. Are there any changes to the rules which would make it easier for you to apply for assistance?
  3. Any other comments?

*As far as the author of this post is aware, the Edinburgh Planning Concordat is the framework for this assistance.

Leith Central CC’s planning subcommittee suggested the following reasons:

  • available funds are insignificant compared to developers’ resources
  • the timescales to deploy any funds are often very short: CCs who will often struggle to submit a considered response, don’t have time to think about applications at this point
  • unless a consultation can address all relevant households (efficiently and reliably), any quantitative results are statistically irrelevant (or even unreliable, as we can’t check the authenticity of individual responses); so we rely on old-fashioned qualitative methods – small numbers, but free
Of course, CEC could automatically pay a consultation grant to a CC (proportionate to scale of application) as a major application is being submitted (and the processing fee is collected).

Community Payback Orders Consultation

(adapted from an email to CCs from the Criminal Justice Service)

The CJS wants to hear your views on Community Payback Orders (CPO). These are given out by the Court so offenders can pay for their crimes as an alternative to a prison sentence.

In particular, the CJS wants to know what you think about the unpaid work part of a CPO, which replaced community service in 2011. This is when an offender does unpaid work within the community.

  • Do you have any experience of offenders doing unpaid work in your community?
  • Do you have any ideas about residents, community projects or organisations who could benefit from unpaid work support?

You can send in your views by completing the CJS’ consultation form. If you provide contact details, the CJS will let you know when the Council’s 2013-2014 CPO Report is available.

If you know of someone or a group that could benefit from unpaid work support, you can complete the CJS’ suggestion form. Please note that the CJS may not be able to help with every request but they will tell you why.

Why the CJS is asking for your views

Your information will help the CJS improve how it works with communities. It wants to increase understanding of CPOs and their importance in helping offenders reintegrate into society and reduce the likelihood of reoffending. The CJS also wants to generate more discussion with communities about unpaid work opportunities.

New Recycling Scheme

(The following is adapted form an email to CC secretaries from Edinburgh Council.)

From 1 September Edinburgh Council will begin the rollout of the new recycling service in phases across the city, and it will be complete by summer 2015.

The Community Councils which will be affected in the first phase will be:

  • Craigentinny/Meadowbank
  • Northfield/Willowbrae
  • Portobello
  • Craigmillar
  • Liberton & District
  • Gilmerton Inch
  • Grange/Prestonfield
  • Granton & District
  • Trinity
  • Stockbridge/Inverleith
  • Drylaw/Telford
  • Leith Harbour & Newhaven
  • Leith Links

From September through until summer 2015, red and blue boxes will be replaced by wheelie bins and boxes.  Edinburgh Council will be rolling out this new recycling service to approximately 140,000 residents with individual wheelie bins.

The new service will allow residents to recycle more of their waste and make it easier by less sorting of items. They will also be able to recycle lots more plastics; including bottles, pots, tubs and trays and also small electrical items.

We will be supplying residents with a smaller wheelie bin (140L) that will be used for general waste. The green wheelie bin will change from being a landfill bin to a recycling bin. It will be used for mixed recycling (plastics, paper, cardboard, cans etc) and they will continue to use their blue box (for glass), food and garden recycling. The red box will no longer be used, and we will collect those that residents don’t want to keep.

All bin collections will be on the same day each week – one week it will be general waste and food bins. The next week it will be the recycling bin and box, garden waste and food waste bins.

Introduction of the new service will be done in phases to ensure that Edinburgh Council are able to resolve any issues as they arise, and can look to make any improvements, as the service roll out progresses.

How will you residents get to know about the changes?

Edinburgh Council will be running a full scale communications and engagement campaign to support residents throughout the roll out. This will include information being sent direct to those affected before the start of the new service with introductory information on the new service. Edinburgh Council will send another information pack near to the start date that will include a collection calendar, details on what items go in each bin, a sticker for their glass box, and where to find out more.

Posters, signs, press, web and social media updates will also happen throughout the roll out.

Edinburgh Council are running events across the city, to speak to residents about the new service.  These are listed on this page:http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20001/bins_and_recycling/22/roadshows_and_events. Edinburgh Council have also briefed their customer and neighbourhood teams to make sure they are aware of the changes.

Brief information on the new recycling service is on this web page: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20001/bins_and_recycling/1023/new_recycling_service
