Make sure you’re registered to vote

Whenever you move home, you need to register at your new address. It only takes a few minutes online and you need to do this by midnight on 17 April.

For the first time 16 and 17 year olds can vote in a Scottish local government election.  Please encourage any young adults you know to register and use their vote.

Once registered, there are a few ways you can vote:

  • in person at your polling place
  • by post
  • by proxy (someone can vote for you).

If you choose to vote in person, please be aware that some polling stations have changed.  So check your polling card when you get it in the post.  You can also check online by putting your address in to our handy search tool.

Choose Youth Work – voting open!!!

Young people in Edinburgh are being asked to vote on projects to deliver youth work across the city. During February 2017, Edinburgh Council invited groups to apply for up to £10,000 to spend on youth work activity that will benefit young people between 11-25, either locally based or citywide.

The applications were screened at the beginning of March by a group of young people and Council officers, based on priorities that were decided by young people following a consultation in 2016.

This is the first year of a three year programme, with 60k to allocate this year, rising to over 100k in year 2, and over 500k in year 3.

A total of 16 projects will now face a public vote. It is now up to you to decide which of these projects you would like to see being delivered. If…

Leith Programme stakeholder update: Pilrig St to McDonald Rd, St James, Trams to Newhaven

Phase 4 update (Pilrig Street to McDonald Road)

The upgrade of the Pilrig Street junction is now complete, and the junction has been re-opened to traffic as of 16th March. Works will now continue on Leith Walk as part of the Pilrig Street to MacDonald Road phase of the Leith Programme. The footpath up to Middlefield and outside Sainsbury’s, and completion of outstanding Crighton Place works, which were previously delayed due to Scottish Water infrastructure works, will be the focus over the coming weeks. The Leith Programme Phase 4 end date remains summer 2017.

In addition to the above, and commencing as of Monday 27th March, CEC will be installing a number of planters and trees to Leith Walk at various locations north of Pilrig Street.

Scotland’s seas and beaches

Great news – a motion has been put forward in the Scottish parliament in support of a deposit return scheme!

A recent poll showed that 78% of people surveyed in Scotland said they support the creation of a return scheme – adding a small deposit on each plastic bottle you buy, which you get back when you return it.

The more bottles returned, the more can be reused or recycled – reducing the amount that end up in landfill and littering our oceans.
