Police Scotland ‘Keep It 100’ Initiative

There are still spaces remaining on the free Police Scotland ‘Keep it 100’ Youth Initiative. The project is open to local young people aged 12-18years from Leith or Craigmillar/Portobello. This is a fantastic opportunity to not only support young people to improve their health and fitness, but positively promote diversionary sports activities and assist with lifelong learning and future employment.

Places are limited so please get nominations in without delay!

The project starts on Monday 24th February and will run for 6 weeks, Mondays in Leith (venue to be confirmed) 7-8pm and Wednesdays in Castlebrae High School 7-8pm. The 6 fun ‘boot camp type’ sessions will be run by Links Fitness.  Transport from home to the venue will be provided.

The aim of the fitness and well-being programme is to adopt a joint approach with Police and partners to support young people to make better choices resulting in a more positive destination and improved wellbeing.  The project would be suitable for any young person who could benefit from a bit of extra support e.g. who may be struggling to engage with school or learning, looked after or accommodated, becoming involved in anti-social or criminal behaviour, experiencing family conflict, etc.

If you know of a young person who would benefit from participating please consider how they could be supported to atten- perhaps you could accompany them to the initial sessions, perhaps they could attend with a friend or they could be introduced to the fitness instructor beforehand? Young people who attend all 6 sessions will be awarded a high street shopping voucher, a discounted Edinburgh Leisure pass and certificate. Access to further support on employment, learning and wellbeing will be available to young people at the final presentation ceremony.

Edinburgh funding fair

EVOC is hosting a Funding Fair on Wed, 11 March 2020 from 2 – 6pm.

Free and open to organisations of all sizes, the fair will include:

  • stalls from funding providers across Scotland and the UK providing information and advice on their opportunities
  • 10 minute funding surgeries with a select number of funders – perfect if you have a specific project in mind as you’ll have the opportunity for a more in-depth chat.
  • free training session from The Robertson Trust on writing grant applications.
  • free Training session from The Charity Bank on social investment – if you want to know more about how loans to charities and social enterprises work, this is for you!
  • get to know your local Third Sector Interface: EVOC, Volunteer Edinburgh, and Edinburgh Social Enterprise will be there to let you know what support is available to your organisation
  • an opportunity to network and meet other trustees and voluntary sector colleagues from across Edinburgh!

Night-shelter details

There is a free night shelter offering food and sleeping facilities to people who are homeless.

Evening meals will be provided by local churches from 9.30-10.30pm. Breakfast is available at 6.30am and people using the service must leave by 7am.

The shelter is at Diadem, 539 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, EH11 3AR

Transport is provided to the shelter in the evenings from the first bus stop going out of town on the Western Approach Road at the Lothian Road end at

  • 9.30pm
  • 11pm (please note: no food will be available at this time)

The Scottish Civic Trust ‘My place’ awards 2020: nominations and submissions open

The My Place Awards celebrate community-led built environment projects that have transformed their locality. The Awards honour projects that have excelled in terms of design and community involvement/impact.

Winners of the My Place Awards are honoured at a reception at Glasgow’s The Lighthouse and have a short film commissioned about their project. Winners and finalists are also featured in an exhibition at The Lighthouse. The My Place Awards are a great opportunity to showcase a project’s success to the community, stakeholders and funders by receiving much-deserved exposure and media attention. The short film about Bellsbank, the 2019 My Place Award winner, reached over 16,600 people on Facebook and the My Place exhibition at The Lighthouse hosted over 12,300 visitors and built environment stakeholders!

Community councils may have suitable projects themselves, or know of others in their area – please circulate this email.

HOW TO ENTER: This year we’ve revamped the nomination process to make it even simpler to apply. Local people can nominate any project they think is special by tagging us on social media @scotcivictrust or by answering a few questions here. Or you can give us a call at 0141 221 1466 for a brief chat. The SCT team will then follow up with the nominated projects. Community groups can also directly apply through our My Place website.

Environment projects drop-in

What: drop-in event to ask local people for their suggestions on projects which could be taken forward to help improve the local environment

Where: Leith Community Centre

When: Wednesday 5 February 2020, 3pm – 6pm

If you can’t attend: download the form, add your idea, and take it to the library or community centre.

In addition to the drop-in event, Officers from the Leith housing team are looking to deliver additional local walkabouts with tenants to identify potential projects, which will be promoted alongside the drop-in event. Once we’ve spoken to local people, we hope to have a refreshed list of potential projects for funding which we can revisit at the next Leith NN meeting (end of Feb time). We would also appreciate your support for the event by telling other people about it, or by coming along and talking to us about any ideas that you might have for an environmental improvement project. Officers from the Locality service teams (Housing, Transport & Environment and Lifelong Learning) are looking forward to the event and discussing any ideas you or other local residents may have.
