Visit Scotland’s biggest Volunteer Recruitment Fair!

Date: Wednesday 24th September 2014

Times: 11am until 7pm
Venue: St Paul’s and St George’s Church (P&Gs), on York Place, Edinburgh EH1 3RH (at the top of Broughton Street)

Charities, voluntary organisations and community groups are searching for volunteers, people like you! After more than a decade, the Annual Volunteer Recruitment Fair is firmly positioned as the capital city’s volunteering event of the year.  It will showcase volunteering opportunities from across the city, putting potential volunteers in touch with hundreds of organisations.
If you’re considering volunteering, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet face to face with around fifty organisations currently looking for volunteers plus access hundreds of other volunteering opportunities, all under one roof.  
Last year our volunteer recruitment fair helped around 1,000 people in their search for volunteering opportunities to make connections with the organisations that needed them.  Make sure you’re one of them this year.
There are many benefits to volunteering, it’s a great way to use and develop your skills, try something new, make new friends and contacts, boost your confidence and general wellbeing, gain valuable experience, and of course, make a real difference!

New Recycling Scheme

(The following is adapted form an email to CC secretaries from Edinburgh Council.)

From 1 September Edinburgh Council will begin the rollout of the new recycling service in phases across the city, and it will be complete by summer 2015.

The Community Councils which will be affected in the first phase will be:

  • Craigentinny/Meadowbank
  • Northfield/Willowbrae
  • Portobello
  • Craigmillar
  • Liberton & District
  • Gilmerton Inch
  • Grange/Prestonfield
  • Granton & District
  • Trinity
  • Stockbridge/Inverleith
  • Drylaw/Telford
  • Leith Harbour & Newhaven
  • Leith Links

From September through until summer 2015, red and blue boxes will be replaced by wheelie bins and boxes.  Edinburgh Council will be rolling out this new recycling service to approximately 140,000 residents with individual wheelie bins.

The new service will allow residents to recycle more of their waste and make it easier by less sorting of items. They will also be able to recycle lots more plastics; including bottles, pots, tubs and trays and also small electrical items.

We will be supplying residents with a smaller wheelie bin (140L) that will be used for general waste. The green wheelie bin will change from being a landfill bin to a recycling bin. It will be used for mixed recycling (plastics, paper, cardboard, cans etc) and they will continue to use their blue box (for glass), food and garden recycling. The red box will no longer be used, and we will collect those that residents don’t want to keep.

All bin collections will be on the same day each week – one week it will be general waste and food bins. The next week it will be the recycling bin and box, garden waste and food waste bins.

Introduction of the new service will be done in phases to ensure that Edinburgh Council are able to resolve any issues as they arise, and can look to make any improvements, as the service roll out progresses.

How will you residents get to know about the changes?

Edinburgh Council will be running a full scale communications and engagement campaign to support residents throughout the roll out. This will include information being sent direct to those affected before the start of the new service with introductory information on the new service. Edinburgh Council will send another information pack near to the start date that will include a collection calendar, details on what items go in each bin, a sticker for their glass box, and where to find out more.

Posters, signs, press, web and social media updates will also happen throughout the roll out.

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to join the Festival team, so if you are looking for a fun, summer experience then this is the opportunity for you…

We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

Artist Liaison, Audience Services, Market Stalls, Kids and family area, Green Recycling Team and Marketing.

We provide:

  • A volunteer training session, which will give you a chance to meet your volunteer colleagues
  • Travel expenses to and from the Festival
  • A meal per shift plus refreshments from our hospitality area
  • 2 complimentary day tickets
  • A limited edition Mela t-shirt
  • You will be able to ask for a reference on successful completion of your volunteer post

You will be asked to attend a short, informal interview and training session.

Leith Walk repairs update (Stakeholder email 46: Progress update)

Dear Stakeholders

Crummock (Scotland) Ltd, our contractors, are entering the transitional phase of moving the current worksites on to the next sections and this email provides the latest estimated timescale update for these moves. We would like to apologise for the timing revisions that have taken place during this initial phase of the works and hope that any disruption and inconvenience has been kept to a minimum.  We’d like to stress that the timescales we publish are always given in good faith and based on the information available at the time.

Footway resurfacing

The contractors anticipate that:

  1. The barriers currently in place enclosing the worksite section immediately north of Pilrig Church (5A West) will be moving down to the next section (5B West) today (30 June) in order to allow the work there to commence.
  2. The barriers in place in the section north of Iona Street (5A East) should move down later  tomorrow (1 July) to the next section (5B East).
  3. The section adjacent to Springfield Street (section 7A West) should be moving later tomorrow to the next site (Section 7B West).
  4. The move of the worksite south of Smith’s Place (Section 7A East) will take slightly longer and the fencing for the next worksite (Section 7B East) should be moving later in the week.

Carriageway resurfacing

The carriageway resurfacing on the current sections will start week commencing Monday 7 July. It is intended that this will involve lane closures and further details on traffic management arrangements will follow in the next stakeholder email.

If conditions/events mean that some of the dates above will change significantly, I will email you with an update.
