Feeling Safe Community Forum meeting

Just a brief reminder that the Feeling Safe Community Forum is holding it’s latest public meeting, tomorrow evening [Tuesday 4th March 2014] in McDonald Road Library, from 18:30.

The meeting is a chance to hear what the work has been done to address the three chosen priorities at our last public meeting held in late November 2013;

  • Street drinking – Address problematic street drinking in parks& greenspaces across Leith, also including the Kirkgate.
  • Housebreakings & thefts – Undertake proactive work across the Leith are in peak times for such crimes.
  • Licensed premises in & around Leith Walk – Undertake proactive work to prevent & detect crime & anti social behaviour associated with licensed premises over the festive period.

Newhaven Past and Present

Fishing Folk    

Since earliest times, Newhaven in Edinburgh has been famous for its fishing, its shipbuilding and its unique cultural traditions, celebrated through song and photography. As part of Fishing Folk, Citizen Curator is working with contemporary folk musician

Jed Milroy and artist Johnny Gailey to raise awareness of the importance of this heritage.

Events for March:

Working Lunch – an occasional get together – with Johnny Gailey

Friday 7 March, 12 – 1pm at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in Newhaven

Johnny will talk about his work as an artist, educator and curator. As part of Fishing Folk, Johnny will be rediscovering the lost sea and communities of Newhaven.

This event is open to – all

Soup of the day will be – Auld Reekie (vegy cock-a-leekie)

A contribution of £1.50 covers the cost of lunch

Speak up Speak out about keeping safe online and on your phone

The harmful effects of cyber bullying and “sexting” are being highlighted by the latest phase of the Speak up Speak out public protection campaign. The campaign launched on Tuesday 11 February, to coincide with Safer Internet Day 2014.

It’s the fourth in a series of campaigns by the City of Edinburgh Council, Police Scotland and NHS Lothian highlighting public protection issues. This phase focuses on keeping safe online and on your phone. It’s a topic relevant to everyone but particularly to:

  • children (spotlighting the issues of cyber bullying and sexting)
  • parents/carers (for advice on how to keep children safe online)
  • vulnerable adults
  • older people
  • domestic abuse situations.

To coincide with Safer Internet Day, Police Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council have arranged a series of events in schools, community venues and libraries across the city.  In addition, a range of posters will be seen in venues across Edinburgh to spotlight the main issues and directing people to these contact points for help:

A radio advert will be aired on Forth One and Two for one week from Tuesday 11 February and a series of child-friendly posters have been developed for primary and secondary schools.

Community Council support from the Scottish Government

Jean Urquhart, Independent MSP for the Highlands and Islands region, has received some answers to her parliamentary questions about CCs.

The answers make for some interesting reading.

She says

I lodged a series of questions on Community Councils in Scotland. I’m encouraged by the responses, which show Governmental commitment to our most local form of democracy, and hope the information provided is useful for those involved in Community Councils.

Friends of Water of Leith Basin – Coalie Park Clean Up, Sunday 16th March

A clean up has been organised by Friends of Water of Leith Basin at Coalie Park and they are looking for volunteers:

I am hoping you can spare some time on Sunday morning to come to Coalie Park at 10am to help us clean up some of the litter that has accumulated along the Water of Leith path. You will also have the benefit of seeing the spring flowers that we planted last year.

We meet at Coalie Park and if you are not sure where that is here is a link to a map
